I got this mention today…

And the thread I was mentioned.

I do not answer whether this idea is pro or con. But recommendation system, using AI-like logic is not ‘good,’ at least in Fediverse.

So if someone does not like a timeline: timestamp-order feed, it is natural that they reach the idea like Proposition 1, feeds by user. This is not a fresh method. We got the list of users we follow, and check posts to choose from this list. You can see this method on chat or DM (Facebook Messaging)

Question: can we make FEEDS BY USER with Mastodon REST API?

Answer: difficult but possible.

The client make 2 or 3 requests to get about 100 leatest posts and group the user.

Mastodon has ‘unread’ management system. So Mastodon store where you have read on timeline when you use Mastodon WebUI or TheDesk. This feature is not known to everyone, but it will help make implement feeds by user.

Proposition by Cutls

Timeline has uniqueness at some degree. This is because timeline may have context. In Japanese Fediverse, there are many tightly coupled statuses which look like loosely coupled(not reply but having relation to a certain status), depending on timeline’s time series uniqueness. In this timeline, no can break ‘timeline.’ It should be timestamp-order, not be list-and-detail style.

I think frequent posters have only ‘visual power.’ They can fill timelines, but their posts have no contents like spreichkor. (If they are not spreichkor, their poster has content power. This is not bad.)

I think clients(Mastodon WebUI, some AP implementation’s frontend, 3rd party) should make a feature between non-muted and muted. In this article, I call this feature ‘Minimize.’

Name Description
non-muted show all posts by the user on TL
minimized show only the user’s name and icon of posts by user on TL
muted show no post by the user on TL

Example image of design:

WebUI:

TheDesk:

You can expand post to show full contents with one-click.

This is easier to implement than feeds by user, and not break the context of timeline.

If there are several posts by the same minimized user between others’ posts, all of them are showed as one minimized post.

Cutls

WebUI:

TheDesk:
